Facebook Live Video and Virtual Tour – the Battle of Matewan
Saturday, May 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pmFree
West Virginia Mine Wars Museum
This month marks an important anniversary: May 19, 2020 is the centennial year for the Battle of Matewan. Although the Mine Wars Museum is unable to commemorate the occasion in person this year, we are planning to release some online programming to mark this anniversary of the 1920 gunfight that left 10 people dead or dying in the streets of Matewan.
On May 16, please join in for a Facebook Live on the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum page at 1:00pm with a special message from our staff and board members, followed by a series of pre-recorded videos that take you on a virtual tour of the town and feature key historic sites related to the Battle of Matewan such as the Stone Mountain Coal Camp where the evictions took place, the site of the gunfight, the 1908 Historic Lock Up and City Hall, and the gravesites of Sid Hatfield and Ed Chambers.
Then, on May 19, Dr. David Alan Corbin, author of the Life, Work, and Rebellion in the Coalfields, will join for a pre-recorded online video discussion about the Battle of Matewan and what it means to us 100 years later.
Please join in for these virtual events, and share the message with your friends! Both videos will be available on the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum social media pages and their YouTube channel. You may reach out to the Director at email@example.com if you have any questions.
