Open House at the Historic Pump House
Thursday, July 6, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
You are invited to stop in for some quiet reflection at the site of this monumental struggle between labor and management on the actual anniversary of the battle, July 6, 1892, 125 years ago .
While the many consequences of the Battle of Homestead’s tragic event persist in society, the sole existing structure of the 1892 Homestead Steel Works is the site of the battle itself, Pump House No. 1 , located in Munhall, Pa.
Many people interested in the Battle, as well as the history of the working class and the Labor movement, are dedicated to preserving the Pump House as a labor monument to working people that will attract tourism, labor groups, students, and anyone in any way interested in Western Pennsylvania’s fascinating industrial and labor heritage. The BHF strives to assist and abet these interests and efforts.
The Pump House today is a structurally sound building, but one that still evokes the feeling of 1892. Remnants of the original pumping mechanisms can be seen in the lower level, and part of the building has been configured for events. The Battle of Homestead Foundation presents programs, movies, lectures, poetry readings, music, and other events, from April to October every year.
