2019 BHF Programs Introduction: Bridges from History

Thursday, April 25, 2019 @ 7:00 pm

The lives and work, hopes and fears, of our ancestors. How was it then? How is it now? How will it be for the next generation?

BHF’s 2019 Programs and Events offer an enticing menu of panels, films, exhibits, and performances, spotlighting 1919–a time of radical upheaval in our nation.

You’ll encounter an Elizabethan playwright’s wife; hell-raising grannie labor organizers; crusading suffragettes; and Guatemalan moms stripped of their kids at the Texas border. There are immigrant Irish socialist Presbyterians; down and out sharecroppers imported from the South to labor in the mills; polyglot striking miners and steelworkers; and union activists snatched from their beds and deported without trial. Discover local heroes and heroines–those who led the ever-constant struggle for liberty, equality, and justice for all.

To introduce the BHF program series, historians Eric Leif Davin, Charles McCollester, Jacqueline Cavalier, and Howard Scott employ their extensive research and experience to spotlight the turbulent post-war era of 1919 USA. Among many topics, we’ll hear about Suffragettes on the march; immigrants’ struggle for labor and civil rights; the Great Migration North of Black Americans, wartime unions, strikes, and radicalism and resistance to capitalism.
