Building Alliances for Tomorrow’s Workforce: New Voices, Technology, and Ideas

Saturday, October 5, 2019 @ 2:00 pm

Are there jobs today that pay a living wage with benefits, provide a decent retirement, and don’t require a college education? Yes! Come hear Union apprentice program leaders (Carpenters, Bricklayers) and other new workforce job educators and their star students-in-training talk about the challenges and prospects for lifetime careers in the skilled union trades, no college needed. Learn how training programs today use the latest technology to meet industry’s needs.

A recent article from FuseCorps.org, dated January, 2019, addresses the topic that our panel of four leaders of workforce training organizations will discuss on Saturday, October 5, 2 p.m. at the Historic Pump House.

“Pittsburgh, once a poster city for economic decline following the collapse of the steel Industry , is making a comeback. Part of that resurgence is a thriving construction sector fueled by rising residential and commercial buildings. Since 2008, Pittsburgh has completed nearly $5 billion in new construction, with another $4 billion in construction underway or in the pipeline. Though that’s good news for the city’s economy, the city lacks the workforce needed to complete these projects, and industry reports forecast shortfalls of workers in the coming decades. Unemployed and underemployed residents lack the trade skills necessary, knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical ― to step into the void.”

Come and learn what our panelists are doing to enable people to join the workforce, with an emphasis
on minority groups.

The panelists, each accompanied by an intern in their program, are:

Steve Shelton, FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh.

DeWitt Walton, of the A. Philip Randolph Institute.

Walter Bentley, Minority and Diversity Recruiting Specialist, I.B.E.W. Local Union No.5 Electrical Apprenticeship.

Free and open to the public
wheelchair accessible.
