SUMMARY:Steeltown Jews: History and Legacy at Work in Homestead\, PA
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, Mar. 23\, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m. The Battle of Homestead Foundation presents “Steeltown Jews: History and Legacy at Work in Homestead\, PA”\, a free Zoom program discussing the development of Homestead’s early Jewish community and the interplay of labor\, industry and ethnicity in America’s most famous steel mill town. \nHistorian Tammy Hepps will review the history of the Jewish community in Homestead\, from the 1881 arrival of the first Jewish family as the steel mill was built to the 1993 closing of the synagogue when the last members could no longer make a minyan.  In parallel\, the talk will explore how the popular narratives around Homestead narrowed over time\, centering on the interplay of labor and industry yet ultimately erasing people and stories that didn’t fit those themes. By restoring Homestead’s overlooked Jewish American narratives\, new insights are provided that offer a more complete understanding of America’s most famous steel mill town. \nREGISTER here on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Windber & Lilly PA Labor History Weekend Apr. 1-2
DESCRIPTION:On April 1 and 2\, 2023\, the Pennsylvania Labor History Society and Battle of Homestead Foundation present a two-day gathering commemorating the 1922-23 United Mine Workers strike based in Windber\, PA and the 1924 street battle between citizens of Lilly\, PA and the Ku Klux Klan. \nThese centennial recognitions of headline events from the 1920s mark decisive turning points in America’s progress toward religious tolerance and union rights and are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.\n \nOn Sat. Apr. 1\, the 1922-23 United Mine Workers strike for union recognition will be discussed at a gathering of the Pennsylvania Labor History Society in Windber’s Slovak Educational Club\, 1300 Jackson Avenue. Panels include “Women in Coal and Steel”\, “John Brophy and Labor Education” and “Eastern Europeans and American Labor History”. Labor singer/songwriter Tom Breiding will perform\, and recipients will be named for the Society’s annual Mother Jones Award\, Irwin Marcus Worker Education Award and William Sylvis Labor Award. \nThe 1922-23 strike was the first natiowide walkout by both anthracite and bituminous miners\, with more than 600\,000 miners demanding better wages\, improved safety conditions\, the right to collective bargaining and legal protection from the systemic corporate violence and intimidation that pervaded company-run coal towns across the U.S. \nOn Sun. Apr. 2\, twenty miles to the northeast in Cambria County\, the borough of Lilly will commemorate what historians have dubbed the Lilly Anti-Klan Riot — the evening of Apr. 5\, 1924 when local citizens forcibly prevented an armed contingent of 400 hooded Ku Klux Klan members from entering town and terrorizing the town’s immigrant population. The Lilly riot was among the most publicized of the decade’s many civil disturbances in which small-town inhabitants vigorously pushed back against the Klan’s anti-immigrant\, anti-Catholic incursions. \nPanels held at the Lilly Community Center/Library\, 101 Memorial Drive\, include “A Vote is a Fire Escape – the Untold Story of How Women took the Vote”\, “The Struggle of Women and African Americans in the Workplace” and “The Attack by the KKK on the Community of Lilly”. Musician Jason Kendall will perform\, and there will be a tour of Lilly’s several historical monuments. \n* FULL SCHEDULE AND CONTACT INFO HERE *

DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, May 11\, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m. — the Battle of Homestead Foundation and Pittsburgh Institute for Nonprofit Journalism present a free Zoom program with award-winning filmmaker Jared Hamilton discussing his new film “Mighty Harlan County” documenting the dramatic 2019 railway blockade by Kentucky miners seeking back pay from a corrupt mining company. \n_________________________ \n*** Participants are asked to view the entire film ahead of the May 11 discussion … the film will be discussed\, not shown on May 11 … please view the film ahead of the May 11 film talk discussion … register here on Eventbrite and you’ll receive your viewing access password to see the film before the May 11 film talk discussion. \n_________________________ \nIn July\, 2019\, the owners of Blackjewel Mining abruptly filed bankruptcy leaving 1\,700 miners across Appalachia instantly unemployed and without benefits or required severance; the miners’ checks began bouncing\, and money already deposited in their accounts was clawed back by the company. \nIn Harlan County\, Kentucky\, dozens of miners mounted an immediate resistance. Physically occupying the rail tracks for two months\, they successfully prevented the last coal train with its $1million+ load from leaving the mine — until they and their colleagues were paid in full. \n_____________________________ \nVeteran filmmaker Jared Hamilton was on hand to record the 2-month rail blockade\, documented from start to finish in “Mighty Harlan County”\, a newly-released 57-minute film offering unique access and insight into the daily struggles of American workers faced with critical career upheaval. \n“Mighty Harlan County” follows the miners\, their families and community supporters through the blockade and bitter legal battle with Blackjewel Mining that quickly made international news. \nIt also provides detailed historical context on the long history of labor disputes and corporate malfeasance in Harlan County and the surrounding coal mining region. \nHamilton will be joined by Dr. Lou Martin\, associate professor of history at Chatham University and author of Smokestacks in the Hills: Rural-Industrial Workers in West Virginia; Jody DiPerna\, senior writer and editor at Pittsburgh Institute for Nonprofit Journalism; former coal miner and educator Kipp Dawson. \n_____________________________ \nJared Hamilton is an Appalachian-born documentary-style photographer and videographer who graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2012 with a BA in Photojournalism. His clients include Appalshop\, New York Times\, Kentuckians For The Commonwealth\, Garden & Gun\, Eastern Kentucky University and National Public Radio. He self-publishes much of his personal work\, including three volumes of his zine Familiar Paths. He is Chairman of the Board for artist collaborative group M.A.R.S. Collective based at Wiley’s Last Resort on top of Pine Mountain in Whitesburg\, Kentucky. \n_____________________________ \n*** Participants are asked to view the entire film ahead of the May 11 discussion … the film will be discussed\, not shown on May 11 … view the film ahead of the May 11 film talk discussion … register here on Eventbrite and you’ll receive your viewing access password to see the film before the May 11 film talk discussion.

SUMMARY:The 1948 Donora Smog Disaster – 75th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, SEPT. 26\, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m. The Battle of Homestead Foundation presents a free Zoom program “The 1948 Donora Smog Disaster – 75th Anniversary” presented by Brian Charlton of the Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum. \nThe 90-minute program with audience Q&A explores the events leading up to the October\, 1948 onset of intense smog that settled over the town of Donora\, Pennsylvania\, a Monongahela River mill town 24 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: "Rust Belt Union Blues" authors Lainey Newman & Theda Skocpol
DESCRIPTION:JOIN THE Battle of Homestead Foundation for an in-person program “BOOK TALK: Rust Belt Union Blues“ featuring authors LAINEY NEWMAN and THEDA SKOCPOL. \nDATE: Sunday\, Mar. 10\, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 pm \nPLACE: First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh\, 605 Morewood Ave.\, Pittsburgh PA 15213 \nADMISSION: Free but Eventbrite reservation required – REGISTER HERE\n \n* Rust Belt Union Blues is published by Columbia University Press – get your copy here!\n \n_______________________________________________ \nLAINEY NEWMAN and THEDA SKOCPOL provide timely insight into the relationship between the decline of unions and the shift of working-class voters away from Democrats. Drawing on interviews\, union newsletters and ethnographic analysis\, they pinpoint the significance of eroding local community ties and identities. \nUsing western Pennsylvania as a case study\, Newman and Skocpol argue that union members’ loyalty to Democratic candidates was as much a product of the group identity that unions fostered as it was a response to the Democratic Party’s economic policies. As the social world around organized labor dissipated\, conservative institutions like gun clubs\, megachurches and other Republican-leaning groups took its place. \n_______________________________________________ \nLAINEY NEWMAN is a J.D. candidate at Harvard Law School. She is a graduate of Harvard College and a native of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. THEDA SKOCPOL is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University. Her many books include The Tea Party and the Remaking of Republican Conservatism (with Vanessa Williamson); Upending American Politics (coedited with Caroline Tervo); and Diminished Democracy: From Membership to Management in American Civic Life. \n_______________________________________________ \n*** While this program is admission-free\, you are welcome to make a monetary donation on the Eventbrite Ticket Page to offset expenses involved in producing our 2024 Program Series.
