The Battle of Homestead Foundation presented a book talk event "Beyond Steel" by local author Christopher Briem. He spoke about Pittsburgh and the Economics of Transformation. This event was held at the Pump House, Homestead, Pennsylvania on June 8, 2026.
This music video, “Women of Steel” composed and performed by Mike Stout, honors the United Steelworkers’ Women of Steel. When women started working in the steel mills and related industries in the 1970s and 1980s, they faced discrimination, prejudice, harassment and often impossible odds.
They joined the steelworkers union and fought for equal pay and rights, and equal treatment on the job. They became a powerful force demanding pregnancy benefits, their own locker rooms and bathrooms, and forged a solidarity amongst themselves paving the way for future steelworkers. They are amongst the true pioneers of the union movement in the USA and Canada. Their story needs to reach millions.
