“Boarding the Westbound”

Produced by BHF member Pauline Greenlick, this is a 14 minute documentary film about the life of Joseph Szalanski, a steelworker from East Vandergrift, PA. His son, Joe Szalanski, a BHF member, wrote a book, “Boarding the Westbound” about his father who was born into a steelmaker’s family during the depression years. He tried to escape working in the mills and joined the hobos visiting all 48 states. He returned home, married and began working in the mills. He died while working at the Irvin Works, PA in a steel mill accident. This documentary is about his book and father’s life.
